“I thought we were in trouble for a second, but it’s fine. We’re fine”… I hope: My early take on Solo: A Star Wars Story.

Hopefully, by now, you’ve taken a look at AJ’s post about Solo: “The Solo movie (Lando Movie?) is going to be a thrill” (if not then go take a look, that dude is always nerding out over Star Wars… always).

But now it’s my turn to give my two ‘credits’ on the upcoming film and man, I am conflicted… but excited… but still conflicted.

You might want to buckle up, baby.

We are about a month away from the release of Solo, and after seeing two trailers and a few teasers, I’m still uncertain on how I feel about the direction the movie is going. I’d be lying if I said I didn’t have high expectations; after all, Han Solo is basically my spirit animal. Like the many other Star Wars fans out there, we’ve grown up loving that scruffy-looking nerf herder. So I don’t think I am the only one expecting a movie that does Han’s bad-assery justice.

And right now, I am not sure if my expectations are being met. It looks like we are in for one hell of a fun ride with this film. The trailers give me the same feeling I had for another recent film, and I keep getting this thought of Solo: A Suicide Squad Story. But please, PLEASE, be better than that movie.

But it is the upbeat, action-packed tone of the trailers that give me a good feeling. It has a good vibe.

Oh, speaking of good vibes, how about Lando? Donald Glover looks damn cool in that wardrobe huh?

But here comes the part where my uncertainty kicks in and I guess you could say I have a bad feeling about this.

I don’t want Han Solo to become a superhero, because he isn’t. Plain and simple. Han is a smuggler, a gambler, a bullshitter; he thinks he is the best even if others don’t even know who he is. So when I watch this trailer, and it seems like he is being set up as this hot shot action star, and I don’t think that is who Han is. Han grew into a hero in the Original Trilogy, he wasn’t one before that to anyone except himself.

If this movie goes the way it seems like it is going to go, a lot of people in the Star Wars universe would know the name Han Solo before the OT started.

Though we will see how it all comes together. I am anxious and nervous, but I am also very, very excited to see my favorite character get his own movie. I’ll make sure to follow up this post again possibly before the movie, but at the least, you’ll hear from me after I see the movie with my reaction and I hope it is a good one.

So Solo…

You look good. A little rough around the edges, but good.
